SEATTLE’S FIRST CRANKIE FESTIVAL: Valentine’s Day
Northwest Puppet Center (View)
For the first time, Seattle audiences have the chance to enjoy an evening dedicated to the unique folk art of Crankies! These hand-crafted scrolls are mounted in boxes and stories unroll as it cranks along. One night only featuring the talents of:
Anna and Elizabeth
All the way from Southwest Virginia, Anna and Elizabeth are widely renowned for their traditional Appalachian music which they combine with storytelling, shadow puppetry and scrolling illustrations. Elizabeth LaPrelle is an acclaimed banjo player and ballad singer appearing at festivals and concerts around the nation and has recorded three CDs. Anna Roberts-Gevalt plays fiddle, banjo and guitar. She has studied with master musicians throughout Appalachia, including the late, great master of Kentucky fiddling Paul David Smith.
Sue Truman, a well-known performer in Cape Breton/Scottish Circles, has been fiddling and stepdancing for 30 years. She has a life-long passion for quilting. All roads came together when she discovered crankies. Her crankies are hand-stitched from felt and tartan telling Scottish tales of seagulls, whisky and sheep!
Skye Richendrfer, a pillar of the Scottish piping community, piped with the Simon Fraser Pipe Band in the 1980s, taking 1st place in the North American competition and 2nd place in the world competition. He is the founder of The Celtic Arts Foundation and brings his deep knowledge of all the Scottish to his piping and storytelling.
Dejah Léger is a traditional musician and artist. Using paper-cutting techniques and drawing from a background of both folk art and contemporary graphic design, she creates crankies for traditional French-Canadian and Americana songs. She has performed her crankies at Festival du Bois (Canada) and in Port Townsend, and will be a featured artist on MusicBox Project’s Americana Women series.
