LEELA
The Integrated Arts of India

Music, dance, the visual and textile arts, cooking, stories and religion have long been intertwined in everyday life in India. The programs by the LEELA organization present Indian arts and culture and suggest ways in which they can be integrated into the existing curriculum. Rhythmic cycles and rangoli chalk patterns present many ideas for the math student. Stories can be turned into written narratives or performance art presentations. The "How was it done?" of textile arts leads to logic, while "Where was it done?" engages geography.

Offerings by LEELA include:

  •   Workshops and residencies by Annie Penta with a multitude of focuses: introduction of classical Indian instruments, songs, melodies and rhythms; Indian textile arts such as ikat, tie dye and block printing; Indian folk tales and epics; rangoli chalk patterns, warli style drawing and more.
  •  Performances by the LEELA members demonstrate the stories, precision footwork, and pure dance forms of classical Kathak dance accompanied by the tabla (hand drums) and harmonium (small reed organ).

"(We) recommend Annie Penta as a teacher of the culture of India. We observed her for six and a half hours as she shared this culture with 90 students at a time. These students were seventh graders in an Integrated Language Arts and Geography block class. Each set of students was engaged and attentive for a full 90 minute period of time."

"I had the pleasure of viewing Elizabeth Falconer when she was a guest artist at Peter Kirk Elementary for our Cultural Arts Day. Ms. Falconer worked with a group of over 50 first graders. She held their attention as she talked about the instrument she played, which she called a 'dragon'. The children enjoyed the stories she told and could relate well to them. I would recommend Ms. Falconer for other groups who might be interested in expanding their knowledge of other cultures. She did an excellent job presenting information about the instrument she played and giving the children a cultural experience."
