The Northwest Folklife Festival is the annual free
climactic celebration
of year-round ethnic, folk, and traditional arts activities
produced by Northwest Folklife. The Folklife Festival
is Seattle's unofficial leap into summer, with four
days of jam-packed excitement. Artists
from the Pacific Northwest along with special guests
from throughout the world create an ethnic extravaganza
embracing music and dance performances, visual arts
and folklore exhibits, hands-on ethnic children's activities,
symposia, dance and music workshops, crafts, food, imported
goods, demonstrations of traditional arts, and more!
The exuberant tradition of sharing and participation
at the Festival encourages exploration and learning
between participants and public alike.
Founded
in 1972 and sponsored by Northwest Folklife and
Seattle Center, Folklife brings together an estimated
250,000 visitors, 1,000 volunteers and more than 7,000
musicians, dancers, tradition bearers and visual artists
who contribute their time, talent, and energy.

Buttons and Souvenirs
The $10.00 Commemorative Festival
buttons are souvenirs
with a mission: they help keep Folklife free. There
will be a different Festival button for every day! Folklife
T-shirts and other sportswear also help keep the Folklife
Festival the best free event in the Northwest.
Important!
Go
Green
to Folklife! Ride your bike, take the bus, hop
on the Monorail or simply walk to the 2008 Northwest
Folklife Festival. Construction of a garage on Fifth
Avenue and the sale of the 2nd Ave. and John St. lots
have reduced parking at Seattle Center. Pay stations
have also reduced parking opportunities. Driving around
looking for parking is a source of global warming, so
eliminate your frustrations, reduce your expenses and
make the world a better place to live. Leave your car
at home.
If you must take a car to the Festival, visit Spaceshare.com/folklife to find a carpool buddy and help keep vehicle traffic around Seattle Center to a minimum.
Community Networking: host travelers, meet neighbors.
Find people who love the same arts and music before the Festival starts! If you're local, consider hosting people and performers from out of town. Bashful about trying out a local class or one of the Festival workshops? Find a buddy with whom you can try something new! And as always, you can carpool, take the bus with your neighbors and connect with others in your community at www.spaceshare.com/folklife .
