About
Northwest Folklife Recordings
Northwest
Folklife Recordings
began initially to document special performances
at the annual Northwest Folklife Festival held
in Seattle, Washington. The 36 year-old festival
is a production of Northwest Folklife, a regional
folklife center that is involved in research,
documentation, cultural and educational programming
in the Pacific Northwest. As a result of some
of the organization's innovative research and
recording projects, Northwest Folklife Recordings
has since developed into a full-fledged record
label that has moved beyond the festival with
an emphasis on regional and world music traditions.

Ethnomusicology Archives present the CD,
Han Madang: Musical Traditions of Korea.
It contains recordings from the UW Ethnomusicology
Archives and includes various genres of
Korean music, including court and folk music
as performed in secular and ritual contexts.
The CD includes rare selections from recordings
made in Korea in the 1960s, and more recent
performances of sanjo (on kayagum - 12-string
zither; and changgu - drum), the Korean
percussion group Samul Nori, Sodo Sori (songs
from northwest provinces of Korea), shamanic
ritual music, and p'ungmul (from farmer's
harvest festival tradition). It is produced
by ethnomusicologist Peter Joon Park with
liner notes in English and Korean. |

"Say
a Song"
Joe Heaney in the Pacific Northwest
|
Joe Heaney was fond of telling a
story about the time that the American
television host Merv Griffin visited Ireland.
At a local pub, Griffin was astonished
to see a particular photograph on the
wall. "That's my doorman!" he exclaimed.
"That," the bartender solemnly declared,
"is Ireland's greatest traditional musician."
Seosamh Ó hÉanaí,
known to the English-speaking world as
Joe Heaney, was both. |
