The Filipiniana Dance Company

The Filipiniana Dance Company
Filipino Showcase
Saturday, May 29, 2010, 3:00 – 5:00 PM
Charlotte Martin Theater
Filipinos visited America as early as 1587 but began to immigrate in large numbers after the United States annexation of the Philippines in 1898. By 2007, there were approximately four million Filipinos in the country, with more than 75,000 in the Pacific Northwest. Although most are "assimilated" into American mainstream culture, they maintain their traditional Filipino values, which emphasize social acceptance in the community, strong extended-family ties, and education as a ladder to social and economic success. The Filipiniana Arts & Culture, through its Filipiniana Dance Company, participated in the first Northwest Folklife Festival in 1972 and will be a showcase performer again this year. (Roger delRosario, Filipino Community Coordinator) Featured Performers: Filipinana Dance Co., Fil-Am Family Choir, Sayaw at UW, P.A.Y.O: Pilipino-American Youth Organization
