International Folkdance Party!
Sunday, May 30, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Center House Court
International folk dancing first gained popularity in Washington state in the 1940s, as an outgrowth of the popular square dance movement. At that time, the term "folk dance" was used for both square dance and ethnic or international dances. The Folk Dance Federation of Washington formed in January 1948, and by November of that year it included 29 clubs. The first statewide folk dance festival was held in Wenatchee in 1949. But by 1953, it became clear that the square dancers and the international folk dancers were on different paths, and a new organization was born. The Northwest Folk Dancers, Inc. (NFDI) incorporated in 1956 and its members participated in the first Northwest Folklife Festival. In 2006 the organization celebrated its 50th anniversary.
