Ukrainian Showcase
Saturday, May 29, 2010, 7:00-10:00 PM
Charlotte Martin Theatre
Ukrainians began immigrating to the Pacific Northwest from the American Midwest and Canada shortly after World War II and have been participating in Northwest Folklife since the mid-1980s. The population remained relatively small until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, newer immigrants—who vastly outnumber the previous generation—have come to personify the Ukrainian community. When East meets Northwest in the realm of Ukrainian music, special things happen. This year's mix features two virtuoso bandurists, a wide range of music styles based in the folk tradition, and the high energy of Ukrainian dance. The Showcase will host performers from both generations and feature Dmytro Hubjak, master of the bandura, Ukraine's national instrument. (Alex Krynytsky, Ukrainian Community Coordinator) Featured Performers: Ola Herasymenko & Bandura Ensemble, Barvinok Ukrainian Dancers, Brandon Vance and Nadia Tarnawsky, Dva Kolyory and Coin of the Realm Orchestra
