On this coming Saturday 7pm at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, Huong Viet Performing Arts Group will present the music and dance show “VIETNAM ESSENCE OF YESTERYEAR 8”. This is the biggest Vietnamese performance in the state. The director of the show and the group founder Dr. Hai Viet Hong invited the famous Vietnamese musician Kim Uyen from Toronto, Canada.

Lê Thị Kim or Kim Uyên is a composer and virtuoso of Vietnamese traditional music on the đàn tranh. In 1984, she received the National Gold Medal for Excellent Đàn Tranh Performance after her studies at the Vietnamese Conservatory of Music. She then obtained a master’s degree in music at Monash University, Australia on Scholarship.

She has actively performed and participated in many national and international traditional musical programs. She has produced and performed in many albums featuring dan tranh and Vietnamese traditional music, as in the groups: Quivering Strings, Musical Transfiguration, Footstep….., and appeared in numerous radio and television programs such as Asia Entertainment.

Kim Uyen played the music in the critically acclaimed movie set in Vietnam called “Three Seasons” that was released in 1999.

Besides performance, Kim Uyen also devoted much time as teacher in guiding and nurturing the next generation of dan tranh artists.  Some of her students are now directors of music groups as Ms Huong Pham and her Tieng Hoai Huong Ensemble in Portland Oregon, and Dr. Hai Viet Hong who founded the Huong Viet Performing Arts Group in Washington state.  Since 2001, Artist Kim Uyen demoted much time in composing and rearranging music for dan tranh.  Most recently, she produced 2 CDs called Enlightened Path and Dreams, which feature some of her new compositions.  Huong Viet Performing Arts Group is proud to present Kim Uyen in solo recital at the Concert, Vietnam Essence of Yesteryear 8.

The Melody Institute was invited as the only none-Vietnamese group to participate in this show. They will do two dances. The director Melody Xie choreographed a new dance according to Kim Uyen’s music “Enlightened Pass”.
