Voice of Roma Benefit & Romani Dance Workshop with Sani Rifati
May 15, 2015 @ 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm
Seattle welcomes Romani activist Sani Rifati for a benefit for Voice of Roma, hosted by the Seattle Balkan Dancers. The evening will feature a dance workshop led by Sani, as well as live traditional and contemporary Romani music from local Balkan favorites, the Bucharest Drinking Team, and The m9.
Sani Rifati is a Rom from Kosovo who loves to dance and teach others the Romani dances from the Balkans. He is an International Human Rights Monitor, a writer, a public speaker, the producer of the annual Herdeljezi Festival in San Francisco, and a drummer. He has helped educate and raise the awareness of the public in the United States about Romani folk arts, and has been a strong advocate for preserving the traditional folk music, songs, and dances of his culture. He is a strong believer in creating community through his people’s spirit of sharing music, dance, oral histories, food and drink.
Sani is the president of Voice of Roma (www.voiceofroma.com) whose mission is to promote and present Romani cultural arts and traditions in a way that counters both romanticized and negative “Gypsy” stereotypes, and in so doing, to contribute to the preservation of Romani identity and culture. All proceeds above the rental of the venue will go to the Voice of Roma a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
