Seattle Center Festál Indigenous Cultures Day Highlights
Native Cultures from Across the Globe
Did you know?
Urban Indian was the Cultural Focus at the 2008 Northwest Folklife Festival. Tracy Rector of Longhouse Media and Native Lens developed the relationship with Seattle Center to create the first Indigenous Cultures Day. Tracy was a member of the Special Focus Urban Indian Focus Committee. This resulted in the one day festival being held on August 21, 2010!
In 2011 Marc Taylor with the Seattle Indian Health Board took it on and he, SIHB team, and community members, have worked to attain official FESTAL status this year (2013).
Explore and experience the rich traditions and contemporary influences of the world’s indigenous cultures through dance, live music, a mini powwow, native film festival, youth day at EMP Museum, arts and craft vendors and visual art demonstrations. This family-friendly event also offers skateboarding workshops, a native youth theater performance and an opportunity for children to make stencil art shirts for free.
Indigenous Cultures Day seeks to bring together people divided by cultural differences, personal prejudices and government policies by providing a basis for better cultural understanding. This year’s festival celebrates the many indigenous communities of Seattle. The Day’s entertainment touches on native cultures from across the globe – from African, Thai, Aztec, Haida, Hawaiian and South Pacific dance to Japanese Taiko drumming, Coast Salish storytelling and classical flute and acoustic guitar.
Seattle Center Festál, a series of 22 celebrations presented by community organizations with support from Seattle Center, considers themes of importance to ethnic cultures in our region, revealing their common forms of tradition and expression, while highlighting their unique contributions to the Pacific Northwest and the world.
Indigenous Cultures Day is produced in partnership Seattle Indian Health Board. Admission is free. For more information on Indigenous Cultures Day, visit Indigenous Cultures Day on Facebook.
