Movin’ Around The World

Experience the cultures of the world through seeing and doing! Through a unique combination of performance and interactive lessons, you can fully immerse yourself in the variety of folk customs and cultures of the Seattle region. Presented during the week of Seattle Public Schools’ spring break, music, dance, and hands on activities will be available that celebrate the diversity and traditions of Our Big Neighborhood with a new focus each day.

Saturday, April 7

A Bailar: Dances and Traditions of Mexico

Joyas Mestizas perform Folkloric Dances of Mexico

11:00 AM – 11:45 AM

Welcome Joyas Mestizas as they display their rich Mexican culture through traditional dance, music, and stunning regional costuming.

Learn Aztec Dancing with Ixtlixochitl White Hawk

12:45 PM – 1:15 PM

Join Indigenous Artist and Cultural Educator, Ixtli as she demonstrates her heritage Aztec dancing; which majority of the dances were created as ritual activity, spiritual and religious acts.

Traditional Mexican Dancing with Bailadores de Bronces

2:00 PM – 2:45 PM

Participate with the dancers of Bailadores de Bronce as they promote the beauty and richness of Mexican traditions through music and dance.

Make Paper Flowers and Skeletons puppets with Dia De Muertos Festival

Discover the history and significance of the Dia de Muertos holiday through art making with the Dia de Muertos Festival. Learn about the importance of the Marigold flower during the holiday by making your own elaborate paper flowers. Then, color and cut a paper skeleton to create a fun puppet to help celebrate in a fun and creative way. Explore Sound with Pacific Science Center

Pacific Science Center will challenge guests to use science to make music. Guests will be invited to play with different objects to explore changes in frequency and amplitude that make sound.

Forgatós performs Hungarian Folk Dances

Step and clap with Danzarte Children Dancers and Ana Montes as they authenticate the mysterious and exciting world of Flamenco Dance.

Bulgarian Children Games and Dances with the Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle

2:00 PM – 2:45 PM

Participate with the Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle and learn knowledge of Bulgarian proverbial lyrics, rhythms, songs and dance.

Learn about Spinning with the Seattle Weavers Guild

The fiber arts represent a long history of creativity and functionality in society. Learn about the fascinating art of spinning, and see it in action!

 

Jamtown Jam!

Anywhere in the world you play music with your friends….we call that Jamtown! We’ll use small percussion instruments (bell, scraper, sticks, shaker and drums) to make small music happenings with families and friends at the Jamtown booth. Come play and share your spirit…be surprised how everyone can contribute to the lovely songs we create in-the-moment!
