2018 Volunteer Job Descriptions

Volunteers are an essential part of the Northwest Folklife Festival! Northwest Folklife depends on volunteers to make the Festival happen each and every year! Please consider signing-up for at least two shifts during the weekend!

Pre Festival

Folkfloor Loader (WEDNESDAY, May 23): Volunteers will meet at a storage facility in Redmond (address and directions sent upon confirmation) to assist in loading the folkfloor into a truck to be transported to Seattle Center. Volunteers will NOT need to unload the folkfloor at Seattle Center. Volunteers will need to be able to lift heavy objects and bend over; this position is generally for the able bodied individual.

Folkfloor Setup Assistant (THURSDAY, May 24): Folkfloor volunteers buff, tape, and polish the folkfloor for the Roadhouse in the Fisher Pavilion. This position requires a high level of mobility as volunteers will be required to bend, kneel, lift, scoot, sit, etc.

Office Assistant (As needed): Office assistants are individuals who are called or emailed periodically when we have large projects in the office, pre Festival. If you are good with administrative tasks and would like to be part of our on-call list, please indicate that on your volunteer application. Please note: there are no scheduled shifts for office helpers, it is strictly on a need basis.

Production Assistant (MONDAY, May 21 – THURSDAY, May 24): This production job requires brains, brawn, and a team player attitude. Volunteers will assist the production crew by helping them set up fencing, hang signs, carry tables, chairs, and more! This position is generally for the able bodied individual. Volunteers will need to be able to stand for long periods of time, lift heavy objects and bend over. This job often takes place outside rain or shine. You will need to wear close toed shoes and bring your own work gloves.

During the Festival

Flex Volunteer: Are you a go getter who is willing to help out in any way? Flex Volunteers get to help out with all aspects of the Festival by filling in for no-shows and helping out with last minute requests! You may also be asked to deliver items around grounds, help set up for the Festival or assist with general office tasks. Flexibility and willingness to help out with any of our volunteer jobs in a must!

Folkfloor Maintainer: Folkfloor volunteers buff, tape, and polish the folkfloor for the Roadhouse in the Fisher Pavilion. This position requires a high level of mobility as volunteers will be required to bend, stand, kneel, lift, scoot, sit, etc.

Folkfloor Strike Assistant (MONDAY NIGHT ONLY): Volunteers will dismantle the folkfloor by ripping up tape and pulling up and stacking the folkfloor pieces. This position requires a high level of mobility as volunteers will be required to bend, kneel, lift, scoot, sit, etc.

FOF Headquarters Assistant:  If you like to rub elbows with like-minded Folklife supporters this is the spot for you! Headquarter Assistants will assist in our Friends of Folklife donor area by helping maintain a clean and efficient atmosphere. Volunteers may be asked to help monitor entry, hand out donor benefits, help run our bag check area or periodically clean the tables.

Greeter: Greeters are the heart of our Festival. Greeters staff our entrances and make sure every patron is acknowledged while entering or exiting the Festival. As members of the Festival Fundraising team, Greeters hand out program guides to patrons and encourage them to make donations as they enter or exit the Festival. This position is for individuals who are friendly and embody the spirit of Folklife. A typical Greeter shift is 2.5 hours, requires the ability to stand for a majority of the shift, and takes place outdoors rain or shine so please dress accordingly.

Hospitality Assistant: Do you have an eye for aesthetics and a cheery disposition? Hospitality assistants help hand out and restock snacks and refreshments in the hospitality area for performers, volunteers, and other participants. Volunteers will also maintain the aesthetic appeal of the hospitality area by periodically cleaning the hospitality area of debris, pushing in chairs and wiping down tables. Some volunteers will also distribute refreshments to stages, info booths, and vendors throughout the Festival.

Information Assistant/Donation Station:  As an essential part of the Festival Fundraising team, Information/Donation Station Assistants hold the power of customer service, knowledge and philanthropy! You will assist patrons with Friend of Folklife donations and all questions related to Northwest Folklife or the Festival. There will be a directory at each Information/Donation Station to help you navigate Festival information and point people in the right direction. These shifts are rain or shine, taking place outdoors in a tent, so please dress accordingly.

Merchant Assistant: Merchant Assistants will help monitor the merchant storage areas while vendors are loading in or out. This job requires a vigilant eye and good communication with staff and vendors. Shifts are outdoors and volunteers should dress accordingly. Flexibility and patience is a must for this position.

Party Assistant (SATURDAY NIGHT ONLY): Do you have experience with party planning, or have an eye for the presentation of a room? Help show the performers and volunteers that you think they’re awesome by helping ensure the Saturday Night Participant Party area is clean, friendly, and pretty! Volunteers must take direction well and work with a team.

Performer Registration Assistant: Are you a customer service oriented individual? Volunteers in Performer Registration will check in performers and direct them to the location of their performance. This can be fast paced and occasionally stressful work. Volunteers will need to work well under pressure, take instruction well, and be patient. Must have good knowledge of the Festival grounds, and be able to lift at least 30lbs.

Production Assistant: This production job requires brains, brawn, and a team player attitude. Volunteers will assist the production crew with various needs that arise during the Festival. This position is generally for the able bodied individual. Volunteers will need to be able to stand for long periods of time, lift heavy objects and bend over. This job often takes place outside rain or shine. You will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for labor based work.

Venue Assistant: A great way to be behind the scenes at a stage! Venue Assistants will help with line control and management while loading in theaters for performances and assist with any other tasks that may arise. Must have excellent customer skills, take direction well, and be able to be assertive if needed.

Volunteer Registration Assistant: Are you a customer service oriented individual? Volunteers in Volunteer Registration will check in volunteers and direct them to the location of their shift. Some volunteers will be asked to do data entry or escort volunteers from registration to other areas of the Festival. This can be a fast paced and occasionally stressful work. Volunteers will need to work well under pressure, take instruction well, and be patient. Customer service skills are essential to this position.

Post Festival

Folkfloor Unloader (TUESDAY, May 29): Volunteers will meet at a storage facility in Redmond (address and directions sent upon confirmation) to assist in unloading the folkfloor from a truck. Volunteers will need to be able to lift heavy objects and bend over; this position is generally for the able bodied individual.

Production Assistant (TUESDAY, May 29 and WEDNESDAY, May 30): This production job requires brains, brawn, and a team player attitude. Volunteers will assist the production crew by helping them take down fencing fabric, signage, and more! This position is generally for the able bodied individual. Volunteers will need to be able to stand for long periods of time, lift heavy objects and bend over. This job often takes place outside rain or shine. You will need to wear close toed shoes and bring your own work gloves.
